A 34-year-old 1st Cavalry Division soldier died Wednesday after he was found unresponsive at his off-post home near Fort Hood, the Texas installation announced Friday.
Sgt. Duane Cass Shaw III was taken to a hospital in nearby Temple, where he was pronounced dead. No further details were provided; the incident is under investigation, according to a Friday news release.
Shaw entered service in December 2005 and had been assigned to 8th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since last June. The chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist deployed in support of Operation New Dawn in 2011 and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2013, the release states.
He earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, a Combat Action Badge and a Driver and Mechanic Badge with Wheeled Vehicle Bar among other awards and decorations, according to the release. Read More
